General Objectives
- Given a patient with a bleeding or abnormal coagulation results, the student will be able to:
- list the differential diagnosis and inheritance (if any)
- list additional investigations required to define the precise cause of the bleeding problem
- discuss management options in terms of risk/benefits
- Given a patient with reduced platelet count, the student will be able to:
- give an approach to the problem
- discuss additional investigagtions
- describe management of the low platelet count
Specific Objectives
Describe the clinical presentation and expected laboratory abnormalities for idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), and causes of decreased platelet production
Describe the use of blood component therapy in management of platelet disorders including type of component, indications and contraindications, expected response, and possible complications
List and classify the commonest causes of thrombocytopenia
Describe the history, physical findings, and investigations required to differentiate the various causes of thrombocytopenia
Discuss the different treatment options of idiopathic ITP
