Objectives

Discuss factors that determine the virulence of microorganisms

Identify the human body’s major defenses against infection

Discuss the pathophysiology of the febrile reaction

Describe the pathologic features of infections


Recognize and discuss the mechanisms through which infections in an organ may give rise to systemic symptoms and signs

Identify and discuss the mechanisms through which certain bacteria and virus infections can present with different clinical "pictures".

Review the factors in a case that contributed to the occurrence of infection (factors related to the host & given in the history).

Correlate infectious symptoms and signs with the pathology of infections

Describe and explain the added potential for infectious disease in immune-compromised individuals

Describe the pathology of several common opportunistic infections in AIDS
